Cinderella

Disney's flashy re-tread of Snow White, missing some of the charm but pushing forward animation technique.

Halliwell says: A feature cartoon rather short on inspiration, though with all Disney's solid virtues. The mice are lively and the villainous cat the best character.**

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Genre-defining animation from Disney. Dated in some ways, but still full of style.

Halliwell says: Disney's first feature cartoon, a mammoth enterprise which no one in the business thought would work. The romantic leads were wishy-washy but the splendid songs and the marvellous comic and villainous characters turned the film into a world-wide box office bombshell which is almost as fresh today as when it was made.****

LA Gets a Lighting Upgrade

Great article about the lighting upgrade the streets of Los Angeles have been undergoing over the last couple of years ... and how it will change the look of LA's most photographed city forever. LED lights are replacing the distinctive orange hue of sodium vapour bulbs, making for a clean, white, modern look.

Face Off: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters V Hansel & Gretel Get Baked

Hollywood loves doing the same thing twice: Capote v Infamous; Antz v A Bug's Life; Snow White And The Huntsman v Mirror Mirror; Lincoln v Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Now here's two takes on the perils of eating candy in a house made of sweets: you've probably seen Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton getting all medieval badass - but have you seen Lara Flynn Boyle as a stoner witch with a serious case of the munchies? Asylum Films have knocked one out too (starring Dee Wallace - aka Elliott's mum in ET).

12 For 2012

In alphabetical order, here's 12 things I enjoyed in 2012...

Argo
Ben Affleck turns in another great actor/director turn as a CIA agent heading to Iran to rescue hostages during the 1979 revolution with the flimsiest of bad cover stories: a fake Hollywood studio looking to shoot a Star Wars ripoff. Great beards, trenchcoats, 70s soundtrack - and it's all (pretty much) true.

Breaking Bad S5
Magnetic, bitches! Can't wait for the second half. S4 was possibly tighter, but watching Walt's turn to the baaaad side was pretty compelling.

Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
Fresh take on modern R&B, adding Sly Stone psych jams to the digital mix.

Game Of Thrones S2
Adding more families, more magic, more dastardly plots and more blood/guts/sexposition to an ever-expanding world.

Girls S1
Cue a stream of "new Sex And The City" / "they're so shocking" / "why is their NY so white?" articles - all interesting points, but it's easy to get sucked up in the phenomenon and lose sight of just how well written this is. Makes up for HBO canning How To Make It In America. Kind of.

Fables
Bill Willingham's ongoing Vertigo series is like Game Of Thrones for fairytales. A great graphic novel drama/thriller/comedy/soap opera.

The Killing III
Focused finale for Forbrydelsen, with Sarah Lund finding love in a hopeless place (another dark room in Denmark where the lights don't work but it's OK because she's got her torch. And Borch).

Lincoln
Total Oscar-bait, will be v surprised if anything manages to beat this when they're dishing them out. Spielberg back to his epic best, showing the mechanics of US government during the Civil War as Lincoln (Daniel Day Lewis) charms, cajoles and tricks his way to the abolition of slavery.

Tame Impala - Lonerism
Aussie psychedelia with bags of personality and tunes.

Toy - Toy
Two tracks pushing beyond the 7 min mark, tight Krautrock beats and Chameleons-style riffing - a promising, solid debut in a post-Horrors space that had multiple repeats at Chimp Towers.

The Walking Dead S3
Zombie action ramped up, more plots, more characters, less time to think "hey, what about..?"

Also CONSUMED & ENJOYED
Modern Family S4, Boardwalk Empire S3, Homeland S2, The Fear, Fresh Meat, Flying Lotus - Until The Quiet Comes, The US Office, Nurse Jackie S4 (another standout performance from Bobby Cannavale - almost as crazy as Gyp Rossetti), Skyfall.

THE STUPIDO DAMN YOU WHY WHY pile
Prometheus
, The Dark Knight Rises

June Tabor and Oysterband

Chichester Festival Theatre

West Sussex based organisation “Roots around the World” have organised a music festival "The Britfolk Footprint" as part of their efforts to promote both new and established artists. This was the headline evening of the festival with veterans June Tabor and Oysterband top of the bill. Their act was largely based around their two collaborative albums, the folk rock classic "Freedom and Rain" and their current much acclaimed "Ragged Kingdom".

The performance got off to the best possible start with the rousing traditional "Bonny Bunch Of Roses" modified to blend folk diva Tabor's smooth and melodious voice with the stomping backing of the Oysterband. However it was not all folk based music as they worked their way through PJ Harvey’s "That Was My Veil", Dylan’s "Seven Curses", Joy Division’s "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and an excellent duet between Tabor and John Jones of the soul classic "Dark End of the Street". The finishing number was the powerfully delivered Jefferson Airplane 60’s classic "White Rabbit".

On the 8th February, the artists scooped four awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including Best Singer, Best Group and Best Album (Ragged Kingdom), making our attendance very timely.

The support acts for the evening were provided by talented and gimmick free English folk trio "Pilgrim’s Way", and singer guitarist Sean Taylor.
