Back from Extinction
It seems that J Mascis and Lou Barlow have buried the hatchet and decided to reform the original Dinosaur Jr. line-up, just in time for some classic album re-releases. They are playing first at Fuji Rock in Japan, with more dates to follow...

Mugison in Tokyo
Got myself down to Aoyama-Cay last night for a showcase night featuring some of the members from the Yellow Magic Orchestra and Chimp-o-buddy Mugison. The YMO were obviously hot-shit in Japan, as the crowd went crazy for them. Mugison was on at 3.30am (waaay too late for me) and rocked the house - Iceland style.

G5
Finally got my hands on one of the new Apple G5's today and took it for a quick test drive. A noticebly huge improvement over my G4, just in terms of zipping round the finder, opening 5 programs at once etc. Started up classic in about 10 seconds. And this was only the single 1.6 model. It is noticebly quiet, especially compared to the current Leaf Blower, but its pretty big. Looks OK, though....
Also saw the G5 ad on Japanese TV. Pretty lame rip off of the Hulk trailer if you ask me.
Picked up a great Japan-issue double Beach Boys LP, in a hard back case and mint vinyl. Also picked up the X-Men 2 DVD, and it wasn't till I got back to the hotel that I noticed they'd thrown in a mini Kubrick figure, and I got Wolverine.

High-Tech
Finally clapped my eyes on some of that high-tech shit that Japan is famous for. Some western hot shots were getting a guided tour of the Sony megastore, so I tagged along for the ride. 3 big things that they seem to be pushing in their latest tech:
1) Wirelessness
2) Computer integration
3) Hi-Definition
Saw all 3 come together in a 1.5 metre wide Hi-Def plasma screen, with Blu-Ray disc player and data centre. The demo guy downloaded the Quicktime trailer for Spiderman over Broadband internet onto the wireless remote, which has its own 7 inch touch screen monitor. He then beamed it over to full size on the plasma screen. Amazing. They also had stand alone touch screen TV's which you can send music/DVD etc too, while you stroll around your house. The future has arrived.

World Tour Of Japan
The chimp-o-san world tour of Japan has begun! Touched down in Tokyo after 17 hours of Swiss Air, with no mini TV. Argh! Forced myself to watch the first half of "Bringing Down The House," the second half of "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" and then found some sweet releief with "National Security." Boy, that Martin Lawrence is a hoot. Not much to report on Japan itself so far. Checked into a Bangkok style backpackers, staffed with euro types working for free board. I hope someone gives me a map for a secret island. Been kicking back in my room, watching Samurai Soap Operas and infomercials for incontinence pants. Later on, the Ramen hunt begins.

SHIFT
Some good stuff in the current issue of Japan's Shift magazine, including a good article about Sonar and the Matthew Herbert Big Band gig, plus a high 5 for FW:Fwd.
