New Jicks
New Stephen Malkmus album 'Mirror Traffic' due August 23rd.
Beck is behind the controls.
That's the awesome cover above.
Don't make the same mistake I made with Real Emotional Trash. That was a grower after all.

3D Pad
A pretty could-be-cool demo for 3D on the iPad, which uses the camera to deduce where the viewer is and adjust accordingly. Not good for that social, shared viewing experience...

BBC Doomsday
The BBC are dumping the previous hard-copy iteration of their time-capsule "Domesday Project" for a more modern format. I have no doubt that "A Website" has about as little life-span as "A Laser Disk" - as Toby Anstis illustrates below.

The Manchurian Candidate
60's thriller with Sinatra that has lost much of the edginess it must have had at the time.
Halliwell says: Insanely plotted but brilliantly handled spy thriller, a mixture of Hitchcock, Welles and All The King's Men.***

HBO 2 GO
It's US-only of course, but HBO's new iPad app looks pretty impressive for catching up with your favourite shows from the comfort of your bed/toilet/plane.
Fingers crossed that Sky Atlantic might release something similar. And that it doesn't cost an extra £10 a month.

West Wars
Never been much of a fan of dolls for boys, but I like the idea behind Sillof Workshop's West Wars - re-imagining, or (should that be un-imagining) Star Wars as a western.

TV On The Radio's new album might not be the immediate attention-grabber that Dear Science was, but it's a grower. In support of the album, TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe has directed an album-length promo, with a little help from his friends.
Warning: there's an 80's video-art vibe to the opening.
Watch at YouTube. Trailer version below.

Dischord on Spotify
Attention skate-punkers. Ever wondered what that obscure Fugazi track on the 20 Years of Dischord compilation is? (It's good!) Or whether the second Evens album was any better than the first? (No!) Dischord now have their extensive catalogue on Spotify, giving you easy access to Fugazi, Minor Threat, French Toast, Dag Nasty and dozens of others ...so you can listen for yourself.
Some personal recommendations: Egg Hunt and Embrace (both awesome post-Minor Threat, pre-Fugazi Ian Mackaye bands)

This one's an oldie ....where I come from. As it's allegedly about to remade, let's enjoy the original Lethal Weapon trailer.
I remember being on holiday in France and seeing posters for this (L'arme Fatale) and that Sidney Poitier movie where they're chasing The Kurgen through the mountains. Looks like only one of them bagged a spot in my memory.

Read more 3 star reviewsThere's An App For That: Yurekuru
BC and I are in the field over in Tokyo this week ....and have been rocked by the frequent aftershocks from last months big quake (a magnitude 7.1 and a 7.4 being the biggest). A frequent sound prior to the tremor is the ding ding of the Yurekuru App, which gives locals a quick heads-up. You can even set a minimum intensity over which you want warning, as most people here don't get out of bed for less than a 7.
Japan doesn't use the same magnitude system as the West, preferring the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale which records quakes in actual relative intensity - rating the quake bigger the closer you are to the epicentre. The ratings are also accompanied by a written description, ranging from "Hanging objects such as lamps swing slightly" through "Hanging objects swing violently. Most unstable ornaments fall. Occasionally, dishes in a cupboard and books on a bookshelf fall and furniture moves" to "Most furniture moves to a large extent and some jumps up".
Update: The USGS has data streams accessible by the "Quakes" app - in English.

New Eddie Vedder: Ukulele Songs
Eddie Vedder is back with a new solo album on May 31st, his first since the recent-Pearl-Jam trumping Into The Wild soundtrack. Ukulele Songs is made up of new songs and covers, unsurprisingly played on a ukulele. Don't worry if that's a deal-breaker for you however as he also has a tour film - Water On The Road - coming out on the same date and directed by Fugazi's Brendan Canty. That film is culled from 2008's solo tour and features solo cuts mixed in with Pearl Jam classics.
First single Longing To Belong is out today.

Tron 1.5
I haven't seen Tron 2 - but if reports are to be believed it's as lacking as the original. On that note, here's a short film that features on the blu-Ray disc and Bridges (get it?) the gap between the two films, as well as unfortunately signalling that more may be coming.

"I want it to sound like we're Cuban or Cambodian kids, and we're wearing berets and we're walking through an alley and we stumble upon this band, and it explodes into this crazy sing-along."
My Morning Jacket have a new album - Circuital - out this spring. Make of that what you will. The good news:
"We want people to have almost the exact opposite experience they had last time. I definitely had some goals of wanting to make this one warmer and somehow more contained and more concise of a statement."

Ad Nauseum: Superbowl Special
At $3m for 30 seconds (or something like that), a spot during the Superbowl ad break is advertising nirvana, with many advertisers creating special spots that air only once. Nothing particularly flashy about this one ...just a clever idea, well made. With a very large licensing budget.
