Promo Promo: Radiohead - Staircase

On the one hand it's not really a promo, on the other it only exists to promote something - a forthcoming full length episode of "From The Basement" with Radiohead doing King of Limbs.

And it's a new track.

Winter Kills

A star studded bizarro blip on Jeff Bridges CV. Possibly a black comedy. Definitely inexplicable.

Halliwell says: Heavy-going and confusing melodrama with much flashy editing. Despite its cast, it was never satisfactorily released.

Justified

Season 2

Based on Elmore Leonard's character US Marshall Raylan Givens, Justified is proving to be one of the more reliable shows on TV these days. Following the proven formula of the first, season two follows a few stand-alone stories, while slowly building a season arc that comes to a head with a finale spread over the last 3 or 4 episodes. Justified eschews the high-concepts of 24 or Lost and instead concentrates on good story, great character and solid production - as Timothy Olyphant's modern day cowboy marshall clears up wrong doing in redneck America.

While heroes don't come much cooler than Raylan Givens, he's frequently given a run for his money by Good/Bad guy Boyd Crowther. It's a typecast-breaking performance from ex-crony-on-The-Shield Walton Goggins, who plays the flip-side of Givens perfectly - trying his best to stay out of trouble, but just not being able to resist it. The most likeable TV criminal since Stringer Bell.

Becoming Dazed & Confused

Chimpovich recently highlighted this "Making of Dazed & Confused" documentary over at YouTube. Well worth a watch, notably for a pre-mcromcomedy Matthew McConaughey. I love those redheads.

That's part 1 above, part 2 below. Continue to parts 3 and 4.

Toy Story 3

A final homage as our favorite toys tug the sentimental heartstrings for one last time. Brilliant.

Kurt Vile at Rough Trade East

A little shambolic, while the heavy sound didn't bring the best from Vile's DIY vibe.

Trailer Park: The Adventures of Tintin

I was never the world's biggest Tintin fan ....but here we have a teaser trailer for the first of three motion capture/CGI extravaganzas from Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Make of it what you will.

Extract

Slight, amiable, if slightly miscast comedy from the guy that made Beavis and Butthead. With Jason Bateman.

There's An App For That: Yurekuru

BC and I are in the field over in Tokyo this week ....and have been rocked by the frequent aftershocks from last months big quake (a magnitude 7.1 and a 7.4 being the biggest). A frequent sound prior to the tremor is the ding ding of the Yurekuru App, which gives locals a quick heads-up. You can even set a minimum intensity over which you want warning, as most people here don't get out of bed for less than a 7.

Japan doesn't use the same magnitude system as the West, preferring the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale which records quakes in actual relative intensity - rating the quake bigger the closer you are to the epicentre. The ratings are also accompanied by a written description, ranging from "Hanging objects such as lamps swing slightly" through "Hanging objects swing violently. Most unstable ornaments fall. Occasionally, dishes in a cupboard and books on a bookshelf fall and furniture moves" to "Most furniture moves to a large extent and some jumps up".

Update: The USGS has data streams accessible by the "Quakes" app - in English.
