New Frusciante

His new website may not have broken the story, but RHCP guitar hero John Frusciante finally has a new album scheduled - because frankly, he's dropped his game since his multi-album high of 2005.

Born again legend Johnny Marr takes a guest spot, alongside Flea, The Sonus Quartet and the New Dimension Singers.

The Empyrean is due on January 20th on Record Collection.

Data Protection

By sheer coincidence, and a determination to distract myself from some tedious essential tasks today, I stumbled accross hard evidence of two products that I have had long designed in my daydreaming mind. First up, the pocket video projector.

At art school I mated a portable tv with an overhead projector, before evolving the idea with a magnifying glass and a video iPod a couple if years back. Both ideas were solid, but the brightness of the source let things down. Now Texas instruments have developed the concept more thoroughly, bringing out a pocket sized projector, which can throw a 60 inch screen onto a nearby white surface. Perfect for when you find yourself flying air India, or you need to show Ari Gold your reel while he's stuck in line with the valet. The 480 pixel resolution is nothing to write home about, but it's better than some of the studio previews we're screening at the ranch this Thursday.

Next up, as previously noted, digital photography is finally entering the mainstream of film production in a major way. I've often wondered what was holding video back from the high-end goodness enjoyed by the digital SLR world for quite some time. Red have taken that idea to a certain point, but now Canon have stepped in with a new digital SLR that can shoot full 1080 digital video (barrage of tech data here).

As it's a regular Canon body you have a huge choice if easily available lenses, which keeps the cost low and the f stop even lower. Check out Pulitzer winning photographer Vincent Laforet's dummy shoot for some sample footage. The clip was shot using the cameras low-light capabilities (+ helicopter + Moby soundtrack), and doesn't feature any post-production to enhance the colours and whatnot. Canon has some clips of their own here, some stills here and even a making-of video.

Michael Mann's not going to be able to sleep.

The concept's certainly building steam (witness this bulked-up camera kit) and Red themselves haven't been snoozing in this marketplace however - and a specs announcement Is due tomorrow on their new 'Scarlet' product, which is said to have radically moved on since initial word got out. Low light, plus low price and slow- mo goodness. Yum.

As a cryogenically suspended filmmaker, both of these technolgical advancements light my fire... and I'm happy to withdraw any claims on the technology.

Can't Touch This!

Amusing article over at Gawker about Bush santising his hands after shaking with Obama. From Obama's book, the Audacity of Hope:

"Obama!" Bush exclaimed... "Come here and meet Laura. Laura, you remember Obama. We saw him on TV during election night. Beautiful family. And that wife of yours — that's one impressive lady."
The two men shook hands and then, according to Obama, Bush turned to an aide, "who squirted a big dollop of hand sanitizer in the president's hand."
Bush then offered some to Obama, who recalled: "Not wanting to seem unhygienic, I took a squirt."

Feature Films Coming to YouTube

Thanks to the success of Hulu.com (a US iPlayer style site that has generated 3x the ad-revenue of YouTube), Google have re-negotiated some of their relationships with Hollywood, and MGM will be the first studio to offer feature films on YouTube. Hopefully that's all going to lead to the watch-anything-whenever holy grail that has been slowly evolving, as online movies follow the lead of the audio revolution.

Four Track Is Back

4 track recording may be making a come back with the new iPhone App, cleverly entitled Four Track. By feeding a line in, or even using the built-in mic, you can use your phone to lay down those future re-release rarities demos - perhaps while you sit in Starbucks sipping a Latte.

There's a 'special introductory price' of $9.99/£4.99 attached however, which may be enough to stop a fair few people giving it a whirl. More details at Wired.

The maker, Retronymns, also make one of my favourites - the excellent Recorder app, which turns your phone into a fully-functional dictaphone.

While we're talking apps, check out Classics too. A mini library of classic books (including Huck Finn, Hound of the Baskervilles and Robinson Crusoe), all included with the app.

Undeclared

(creator Judd Apatow)

Undeclared follows the lives of a group of freshman students at a fictional US University. While not exactly a sequel to the excellent Freaks & Geeks, this comedy drama is a something of a logical follow up - featuring some of the same actors, in similar roles, with the high school setting upgraded to a freshman University dorm. The most notable difference is the contemporary setting, as opposed to the retro 70's of Freaks & Geeks.

Judd Apatow moves up from the exec producer role he took on Freaks & Geeks into the fully-fledged Series Creator seat here, and the series he created turned out to be something of a training ground for many of his regulars - with the young Seth Rogan serving as a writer and story editor on much of the show and Jason Segel taking a major role. A pink-eye free Jay Baruchel puts in sympathetic performance as Steven, tentatively finding his way through college, as well as dealing with a parental break-up - while the cameos come thick and fast from the likes of Adam Sandler (as an asshole version of himself), Will Ferrell (as a temperamental essay forger) and even Ben Stiller. Loudon Wainwright also puts in a recurring performance as Steven's father.

College rights-of-passage could be considered dangerous ground and I would imagine it's the kind of thing BBC3 could fuck-up beyond all recognition. Storylines here cover many of the standard University plots, but that also provides the main reason for the show's success. You'll be able to relate to the underage drinking, the friend-making process, the sexually successful roommate, the cool kids/geeky kids divide and the driving around town with the one guy with a car in search of a party you're not really invited to. As this show finds its feet there is a natural feel to much of the dialogue and the humor is well-timed, comical, contemporary and believable, much like The Office or Spaced, and effortless performances from many of the lead roles really fill out the characters, making for an eminently watchable show.

Unfortunately, like its predecessor, this one bit the dust after the fickle US market failed to recognise its brilliance...

Arctic Monkeys

At The Apollo

Domino / Warp Films

With a couple of hit albums under their belts and the band already distracted by side projects, the obligatory live video seems to be one way of maintaining the Arctic Monkeys status - documenting their monster Worst Nightmare tour, which culminated with this show at the Manchester Apollo in December 2007.

Left-field production company Warp Film may be behind the production, but filming wise it's a pretty straightforward affair, with a couple of camera on tracks, a few roaming grainy numbers and pretty much just the stage lighting. A decent effort has gone into the post-production, with a Burt Bacharach/Thomas Crown style intro and outro, and the occasional burst of split screen.

It's a fairly faultless performance from the Monkeys, featuring a pretty conventional set-list waith all the highlights in all the expected places (Teddy Picker, When The Sun Goes Down, 505). There's little banter from the band, pretty much whittling the whole production down to little more than a slightly cooler that normal edition of a T4 concert special. For fans of the band this may be essential viewing, but for any body else it servers as little more than a decent document of what this band were up to, at this particular point in time.

Skate or die: Mark Gonzales

BC filled the void nicely last week, but I'm now back with a vengence after my sun-soaked So-Cal holiday for another thrilling installment of Skate or Die.

It wasn't all R&R, and while strolling down Sunset Blvd I spotted this Car Wash, where skate legend Mark Gonzales famously launched himself off, in the hallowed pages of Grand Royal magazine - losing an eyebrow in the process. He was already a well-established legend on the skate scene by that time (mid 90's).

Fast and fluid, Gonz brought together old school carving moves and inventive gnarliness. Always a bit left of centre, he made his name on the neon-drenched Vison Streetwear team in the late 80's, famously using the newly popular ollie to clear a huge gap at San Francisco's Embarcadero - leaving the terrain forever known as the 'Gonz Gap'. Gonz created his own Blind Skateboards, and with future movie star Jason Lee created one of the all-time top video Video Dayz, mixing arty filming with incredible tricks. Clip above.

The arty-farty world was Gonz's other passion and he has built a pretty solid reputation for himself as an artist, with shows at Alleged in NYC (along with Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Geoff Mcfeteridge etc - check out Beautiful Losers, but that's another post) and even 291 in Hackney. A giant pink cat and an a pretty mental in-gallery skate course are amongst his most famous pieces - the latter of which has been appropriated for a promo by Jason Schwartzman (see below).

The Stills

Oceans Will Rise

Arts & Crafts

Oceans Will Rise sees Montreal rockers The Stills return with a third album, and a new home - on Broken Social Scene's Toronto-based Arts & Crafts label.

Bombastic opener Don't Look Down seems like a radio-friendly introduction for what to expect from this album, as it's gently pounding drums and keyboard chug things along - with a catchy chorus and a well-oiled guitar solo. Snow In California continues the radio-freindly sounds, and I feel I've been misled.

The record label and album art might portray them as another bunch of hard rocking Canadians, but there's little here to recommend to the Black Mountain-loving, Kokanee drinking plainsman. Like Pablo Honey-era Radiohead, these guys have always sounded like they have the potential to sell out hit the big time, and that sentiment is only re-inforced here. Through tracks like the anthemic Eastern Europe or Dinosaurs the band seem to have one eye on the stadium rock prize, with a slickly produced and ambitious record. There's a place for all that of course, just not my place.

Oceans Will Rise rolls with the punches here and there and while there's certainly some beef to the sound here and there (Roobius), it's just so polished that it offers little new or engaging. While the lyrics and meaning of the album might be laced with doom and gloom - it all gets lost in the eminently catchy tracks and glossy production.

The Chimpomatic World tour of CA, AZ & NV

On tour out in the South Western states of the US this month, taking in the Griswold-approved sites of Joshua Tree, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, Route 66 and Las Vegas - before heading back to LA.

Having fun so far, and surprisingly spotted a potential snow-spot in the Old West town of Flagstaff, which it turns out has an altitude of 7000 feet.

'Living the dream' seems to be the order of the day, with an uncountable amount of middle-class, silver-haired Americans touring the country in Ford Mustangs or on Harley Davidsons. If everybody's living the dream, you have to wonder who's running the emerald city?

A quick head count in Vegas matched the 80/20 rule, with 80 fatsos for every 20 barely acceptably-weighted Americans. One exception was muscle bound ginger-nut Carrot Top, who provided some laughs at a Vegas show.

Have notched up a good 1000 miles so far, but the trip highlight has to be BW facing her worst fear: a 4 foot Arizona rattlesnake, 6 feet in front of us.

More snaps and video in surveillance.

A Party Political Broadcast From Randy Randall

------ Forwarded Message
From: Randy Randall / NO AGE
Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2008 01:16:40 -0700 (PDT)
Subject: No Age vs. CBS

Hello All,

I apologize for mass email but I feel that it is important to get this out to as many people as possible. I have recently come under what can only be called extreme censorship. On Oct 2nd No Age was scheduled to perform on the Late Late show with Craig Ferguson, to be broadcasted on CBS later this month. I felt it was important to voice my choice for presidential candidate, Barack Obama, seeing as the episode would air 8 days before election day. We rehearsed on the stage and were waiting to film our performance when I was told that I would not be able to wear my Barack Obama t shirt. I was shocked, it seemed like some kind of joke, especially coming from a show like the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, produced by David Letterman's production company World Wide Pants. The representatives of CBS said that by wearing an Obama T-shirt I would be violating the FCC rule of equal time for all candidates
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-time_rule
however there there is a doctrine of fairness that former President Ronald Reagan and current president George W Bush supported the repeal of in order to allow themselves more time in the media.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairness_Doctrine
Regardless, the Equal time rule clearly favors candidates with more financial support. Ralph Nader and Ron Paul are not seen nearly as much as Obama and McCain.

I had to look at what I was up against and with 5 minutes before we were supposed to shoot I had only a hand full of options. I could either A) walk away from the show and decline from appearing on the show, or B) change my T-shirt. My first choice was A. However, after talking way past the 5 minute mark, Dean and I decided that it would be better to take advantage of the stage we had at our disposal. I decided to make an appeal for "Free Health Care" on my T-shirt seeing as I was unable to voice my support for Barack Obama. Access to affordable health care is an issue very near to my heart for many personal reasons and I am sure that many of you can relate. I have lost and stood by as many of my close family members have battled with terrible illnesses. I have myself gone through traumatic hospitalizations only to come out the other side alive but horribly in debt.

I encourage all of you to speak out about your political views and your feelings about the many issues that are up for discussion at this crucial time in American history. CBS and major media outlets DO NOT speak for me. I do not look to corporate media to inform my views on the issues. Together through our communities we can make a difference and make it a point to express our views in order to shape our world into a better place.

Thank you,
Randy Randall

Google Streetview

Just when the Google Maps / Earth combo couldn't really get any better, they go and introduce Streetview. While the previous mapping technology pulled in a lot of existing data and re-formatted it for Joe-public, streetview involves Google driving cars with 360 degree cameras on the roof down every street in a city. The images are mapped onto the correct co-ordinates, giving a keyhole view into the actual street.

While some of the US cities have been available on the system for a while, things are really starting to take off as it becomes a more widespread technology. Despite some sensitivity backlash, Japan is now online, as well as France and Australia - and after jumping over some privacy hurdles, London is coming online soon.

Here's Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, the Hollywood sign, George McFly's house (actually in Pasadena), Shibuya crossing in Tokyo and my old flat in Melbourne. There's already dozens of strange sightings, as well as lists of best-ofs...

God know how Russia will embrace it.
