Argo
(dir. Ben Affleck)
Trenchcoats, crazy CIA plans, beards and a gripping true life hostage situation - there's a lot to enjoy in Ben Affleck's latest. Following The Town and Gone, Baby Gone, this is another assured directorial job from Affleck, here channeling the spirit of 70s classics like All The President's Men and Klute to craft an intelligent, grown-up thriller that doesn't have to resort to shoot-outs to ratchet up the tension. Bonus points for Van Halen and Led Zep on the soundtrack.
Tehran 1979: Ayatollah Khomeni's revolution is in full swing, the US embassy is stormed, 52 hostages taken - but six staff members manage to escape in the confusion and seek refuge in the Canadian embassy. Back in Washington, Carter-era spooks concoct "exfiltration" plans - with "the best bad idea" being a fake Hollywood production company scouting middle eastern locations for a Star Wars rip-off.
The film keeps the potential for any "Hollywood - so CRAZY!!" stuff to a minimum - managing to contrast it with the intensity of 70s revolutionary Tehran without resorting to Get Shorty wackiness. Max graininess in the cinematography (shot with an Arri Alexa, fact fans, as well as "on film, cut in half, blown up 200%" according to IMDB trivia) combines with actual news footage to build convincing period atmosphere.
Affleck plays Tony Mendez, the CIA agent leading the plan, a role that plays to his strengths. The rest of the casting is spot on - Bryan "Breaking Bad" Cranston, Tate "Damages" Donovan, John Goodman as Hollywood make-up expert John Chambers (responsible for Planet Of The Apes' apes and Spock's ears), Alan Arkin, Victor Garber, Rory "Dazed And Confused" Cochrane, Titus (Lost's Man in Black) Welliver, Scoot (Monsters) McNairy and a cameo from Adrienne Barbeau in the goofy Argo cast's table read.
For more background, here's the Wired article on the actual CIA operation and the real-life fake movie. It's a great read, though obviously it's pretty much the entire plot. One nice detail that gets a little lost in the film - Captain America co-creator Jack Kirby did the original comic strip-style production drawings.

2010! New Decade! New Stuff!
yup, another random set of arbitrarily assigned numbers has rolled over and so it's time to look forwards and get excited about some new stuff...
Gil Scott Heron - I'm New Here as you'll see from the video above, the mighty Gil Scott Heron is back with an excellent set of new songs for XL (including a Smog cover on the title track!). Voice like a mountain.
Midlake - The Courage Of Others More melancholia, stripped-down, low-key folkrock from the Midlakers. Think this is going to find its way into a lot of chimp top tens at the end of the year.
Peter Gabriel - Scratch My Back can't wait to hear what he's done with Paul Simon's Boy In The Bubble
Herbert - One One/One Pig/One Club A trilogy of new albums from the Accidentalista - one's a solo effort ("hot like a house on fire!"), one's made up from a pig and one's from a night in a club - think it's going to be 3/3 for this lot, and he's also producing albums for Eska, Rowdy Superstar and Barbara Panther
Vampire Weekend - Contra more songs about punctuation and fonts? who could resist?
Beach House - Teen Dream nice'n'woozy Flaming Lipsy rock
Washed Out - not sure what's coming out when exactly, but this Polaroidy valium pop is great
Nurse Jackie BBC2, Monday 4 Jan - Edie Falco returns as a junkie nurse, looks v good
Glee E4 11 Jan - v campy high school musical, but it's a lot of fun too. Don't! Stop! Beleeeeiving!

Skins
Season Three
E4
When Skins first appeared on our radar, it looked like it was going to be another painful British attempt to do teen TV - like UK kids doing an amdram ad for American Apparel. But even though it's hyper-styled, and you'd be pretty lucky if your teen years were/are as action-packed and as witty as theirs, it soon became clear that this was easily the best teen drama we've had in years... since... um... Press Gang?!
The secret seems to be in the production method. Having kids writing with seasoned writers seems to bring out the best of both: well-plotted and paced stories, without too much cringy made-up yoofspeak. The teen cast - Nicholas Hoult (Tony), Dev Patel (Anwar), April Pearson (Michelle), Mike Bailey (Sid), Hannah Murray (Cassie) and Mitch Hewer (Maxxie) - were all engaging, but also bolstered by the decision to cast a large part of the Brit acting/comedy population as their parents and teachers - Harry Enfield, Nina Wadia, Danny Dyer, Morwenna Banks, Peter Capaldi, Josie Lawrence, Kevin Eldon, Neil Morrissey, Arabella Weir, Mark Heap, Sarah Lancashire and Bill Bailey - not a bad lineup for any show.
By shifting the focus from character to character every episode, it also built up a real sense of what it's like to be in school - sometimes you're at the centre of the action, sometimes on the margins looking in - a clever way of making it about everyone, not just the initially more obvious characters like Tony (although, by S2 they'd also found a way of subverting his alphateen personality).
After the first two series took us through everything from exams, raves, anorexia, relationships, to losing your virginity and a parent, C4 came up with a pretty bold announcement: they were going to keep the third series set at the school after everyone had left for university, and start again with the next generation - effectively culling the entire cast (apart from Tony's little sister Effy, who cheekily moved into his room at the end of the last series).
It takes about ten minutes for you to get over it. At first, it's quite annoying to watch three new skivers hanging out drinking and getting stoned before school - but then Harry Enfield shows up, there's a typically daft sequence involving some ketchup and a bike and the whole thing starts to roll again, with enough energy and wit to suggest that they might be able to keep this franchise rolling for years.
This term, they've got some twins (one nerdy, one full of herself - and actually played by real twins, not some Prince And The Pauper CGI trickery), a geeky magician, an over-cocky player who fancies himself almost as much as he fancies every other lucky, lucky lady in the class, a sk8tr boi, and a kid from Africa. Would be nice if they let some of the first generation show up from time-to-time - and it would be great to see Bill Bailey dancing with a dog again) - but on the strength of this opener, it seems like they've made the right call to stay in sixth form, and not head off to uni.

90210
Pilot
E4
Still got a lot of residual affection lying around for the original adventures of the 90s Peach Pit kids, so it was pretty interesting to see where they're taking this new reboot of the teen soap. It's set in the same universe, with Kelly (Jennie Garth) now a high school counsellor and the big sister of one of the new kids prancing around West Beverly High's catwalks halls.
A lot has changed in teen TV since the dawn of 90210 1.0 - Dawson's, Freaks And Geeks, The OC and most recently Gossip Girl have all pushed the genre way beyond BH's Dallas Jnr aspirations. In its day it was pretty much the only show around to show teenagers apart from Neighbours - now we've got used to seeing amplified angst played out in style, with studied indie soundtracks, and click-here, buy-now fashion tips.
In place of the Brandon and Brenda Walsh good kids from the sticks dealing with the madness of LA, we've got the Wilson family moving from Kansas. Dad Wilson is the new school principal (oh no! that won't be a problem for the kids!); Mom Wilson doesn't get on with Grandma Wilson; Wilson Daughter had a fling with one of the LA hotties a few summers ago, and he's now turned into a bit of a playa; Wilson Son is adopted and plays lacrosse.
Most of the fun in the first ep - apart from trying to work out if Jennie Garth really is Jennie Garth (where's that perky nose?!) - comes from watching the actors who are refugees from two chimp TV favourites. Jessica Walter seems to be replaying her excellent turn as Arrested Development's boozy matriarch Lucille Bluth, with her cocktails-for-breakfast grandma Tabitha Wilson. Even stranger to deal with is her adopted lacrosse-playing grandson - yes, it's corner kid Michael from The Wire (Tristan Wilds) - who somehow manages to refrain from popping a cap in anyone's ass, even when he gets well-bullied on the lacrosse field. Not a scenario that came up in Baltimore often.
It's probably not quite trashy or smart enough to really carve out a niche of its own in the current teen TV world, but may hold interest for a stumble-across-it hangover viewing. Shannen Doherty (star of 90s things like the I Hate Brenda Newsletter) shows up around ep5, so that's got to be worth checking back for.

Dead Set
E4
"Big Brother House - this is Davina!"
Yes, those of you who find those words scary enough will probably find plenty to enjoy in this horror set in the Big Brother house. Ever wanted to see those smug, myopic sun-worshippers have their cider-guzzling faces smashed in? Check. Think they all deserve a grizzly death after taking up all that air time every summer with their inanity? Check. Want to see Davina herself come to some kind of unpleasant end? Well... you might...
But what lifts this show above the "ooh, we're a nation of zombies for watching Big Brother all the time" level of debate, is that there's a real affection for the actual show itself as well - so if you're a BB fan then there's plenty to enjoy here too. Stacks of former contestants hanging out in the BBLB green room (Makosi, Ziggy, Bubble, Kinga etc - is being a zombie the new Z-list?), behind-the-scenes footage of the production team shouting at each other and living off styrofoam coffee, slagging off the housemates from behind the mirrors, sleazing on the juniour members of the team and then stepping in for some "voice of God" time when things are getting out of hand. And yes, Davina's really in it, lending the whole show the reality it needs to spiral out of.
Horror geeks will get off on the genre touches - Ginger Snaps and Manchester Morgue are just two culty references dropped into the script; Big Brother aficionados will warm to a show that plays out like a behind-the-scenes show, with the added bonus of some BBLB team-ups from housemates from different series.
By shooting the series in a pretty accurate recreation of the actual BB house (the real one was being prepped for BB9), there's none of that sinking feeling that the set doesn't look quite right that you get with so many shows on British TV; it looks exactly as it should because we're used to seeing people running around its artificial living room. Strangely, adding in the odd zombie doesn't detract from this. In a way it's the perfect modern set-up for a group of people who wouldn't know what was going on in the outside world, which writer Charlie Brooker seems acutely aware of. Also, it uses the conventions of the zombie genre effectively because you've actually got a ready-built group of people who have been put together precisely because they probably won't get along - and now they're being forced into a genuine life-or-death team-work situation after weeks of bitching and moaning at each other for eating the last egg...
Decent cast, including Jaime Winstone, Kevin Eldon, Riz Ahmad; artful direction; speedy modern zombies; lots of fast-paced gore. If the rest of the series is as tight as the first episode, this could be the first decent drama Britain's produced for ages that didn't involve some repressed people in bonnets slowly romancing each other while reading poetry in a parlour, or a bunch of middle class people divorcing each other and then uncovering a twenty year old crime in their back gardens coming back to haunt them.
And yes, zombie Davina - that's got to be one of the classic moments of the year.

Recount
(dir. Jay Roach)
HBO Films/ More 4
Fantastic dissection of the madness of the 2000 US election, when the world was left trying to work out what a hanging chad was and why it was keeping Al Gore from becoming President.
Even though you know the outcome (Bush stole it, Iraq 2.0 kicked off, thousands of people died) it's hard not to be swept up by the Democrats determination to play it out fairly and get the votes recounted. There's so much guff and propaganda talked about "democracy" from freedom lovers like Bush, that when you see what it actually comes down to up close and in action (adults arguing over tiny bits of paper on confusing ballot papers and what indentations may or may not signify), it's hard not to be at the very least, a little cynical.
At the same time, it presents a pretty forensic examination of the Republican attitude, and shows just how they manage to get their worldview across so fervently, using an intoxicating combination of lies, coercion, legal wrangling and attacks to simply wear down the nation - effectively planting the argument that the recount process was simply going on too long, so Gore really had better acquiesce because everyone was getting bored of trying to figure it out. Madness, but totally inspired media logic.
With a cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley, Jr., Laura Dern, John Hurt, Denis Leary, Bruce McGill and Tom Wilkinson this is a quality outing, pushing the story along with real-life news footage and reconstructions.
It's already been on in the US, More4 are showing it 9pm, Fri 3 Oct - just before the first Vice-Presidential debate.
For further insight into the inner workings of the modern republican dirty tricks machine, BBC Four are showing Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story in their Storyville strand in a few weeks time, another essential recent history lesson.

Kubrick!
More 4 have a season of Stanley Kubrick movies coming on in July, and to promote they've gone through possibly even more trauma than the idiosyncratic director would have even put himself through.
Pulling in a string of look-a-likes, the channel has re-created the set of The Shining (no, not that one) and shot a 65 second tracking shot, culminating at the start of Kubrik's own famous tracking shot.
Check it out here.
The season includes a new documentary - Citizen Kubrick - as well as screenings of 2001, The Shining, Paths of Glory and the excellent Barry Lyndon and a range of little-seen shorts.
