RIP Joe Cocker
The Sheffield singer - best known to 80s kids as the guy who sang the Wonder Years theme tune With A Little Help From My Friends - has died at 70. Little background to how the reruns couldn't afford his amazing version here on Quartz

RIP: Harold Ramis
Looks like Venkman and Ray might be Ghostbusting Spengler if there's ever another Ghostbusters movie - as co-writer and star Harold Ramis has passed away, aged 69. He also directed all-time classic Groundhog Day, National Lampoon's Vacation and Caddyshack ... plus less-than-classic Multiplicity.

RIP: Elmore Leonard
Legendary author Elmore Leonard has died, aged 87. As well as being an author, Leonard has penned many film scripts all the way back to the 50s - including Joe Kidd and Mr. Majestyck. He saw a bit of a revival in the 90s with movies like Out of Sight, Jackie Brown and Get Shorty being made from his material. Recently he's seen a lot of success as the creator of Justified's leading character - Raylan Givens.
Do yourself a favour and read a copy of Tishomingo Blues.

RIP: Carmine Infantino (1925-2013)
Good obit over on @AICN for the DC comics artist.
“There are few people in this world that have had as much of an impact on the industry as Carmine,” added DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. “He bridged both the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, shepherding in some of the most successful periods in our history and setting the course of our characters that is still seen today. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will remain forever.”

RIP Terry Callier
The soul, folk, jazz legend died in Chicago yesterday. Here's two great tracks that showcase his talent for setting a mood and taking it as far as it can go: I'm A Drifter from 1968's The New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier and Lazarus Man from Timepiece, his 1998 comeback.

Absolutely gutted to hear that MCA has passed away, and I suspect Nathaniel Hornblower might have gone with him. As an 11 year old hip hop fan, the disreputable Beastie Boys were clearly going to be a one hit wonder as far as the parents of the world were concerned, but who would have thought they would have evolved to be so endlessly influential and culturaly significant. As a director, Adam Yauch put his hand to many of the Beasties inspiring videos - and more recently through his company Oscilloscope he has become a truly influential character in the world of indie film.
A true loss that hits hard, especially when he was taken so early. RIP.

RIP: Steve Jobs
Not many people can claim to have been behind a genuine game changer in their career, while Apple boss Steve Jobs can be comfortably given responsibility for more than a handful. Most people didn't really understand what the iPod was when it debuted (see this of-the-time reaction to that announcement), and it's impossible to go into any phone shop without instantly seeing the impact of the iPhone on the design of 99% of the competition. No one even knew they needed an iPad when that first arrived. Check out this great set of Time photos by Diana Walker.
He even managed to leave one more thing: the authorised Steve Jobs biography was due to land in November, but a 40,000% increase in demand has seen it shoot to the top of the best seller list and get a bumped up release date of October 24th. Jobs gave his last interview for the book 4 weeks ago, at which point he knew his time would soon be up. It will no doubt make for an inspriing read, from a true innovator.
