3D Pad
A pretty could-be-cool demo for 3D on the iPad, which uses the camera to deduce where the viewer is and adjust accordingly. Not good for that social, shared viewing experience...

New Chili Peppers
Blindly stumbled across news of a new Chili Peppers album today while reading of a book signing in LA - due summer '11, Flea on piano. Though it's anyone's guess on how they'll fair with Frusciante back in hiding and Josh Kilinghoffer taking over.
Keidis still looking cool. Will Ferrell Turned up too.

BBC Doomsday
The BBC are dumping the previous hard-copy iteration of their time-capsule "Domesday Project" for a more modern format. I have no doubt that "A Website" has about as little life-span as "A Laser Disk" - as Toby Anstis illustrates below.

Big, Modest Mouse
Johnny Marr must be out, but Big Boi from Outkast is in - taking the controls on the new Modest Mouse album, according to his own website. I'd be happy even if Rolf Harris was in charge to be honest, as long as we get something. It's been 4 years since We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank.

The Email Game
Most people respond well under pressure, so setting a clock when you're dealing with email can make decisions a bit easier. Try the email game. Though I'd suggest swapping points for beers. Or just toughen up in general.

HBO 2 GO
It's US-only of course, but HBO's new iPad app looks pretty impressive for catching up with your favourite shows from the comfort of your bed/toilet/plane.
Fingers crossed that Sky Atlantic might release something similar. And that it doesn't cost an extra £10 a month.

Never been much of a fan of dolls for boys, but I like the idea behind Sillof Workshop's West Wars - re-imagining, or (should that be un-imagining) Star Wars as a western.

Watt + Grohl + Vedder + Smear
Mike Watt wrapped up his US tour in Seattle this week - and in a throwback to his epic 90's feats album "Ballhog or Tugboat?", he was joined on stage by Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder and Pat Smear for a run through of Big Train, followed by an extended, enthusiastic jam. Dave Grohl rules it.
A suitably excited fan filmed the performance.

TV On The Radio's new album might not be the immediate attention-grabber that Dear Science was, but it's a grower. In support of the album, TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe has directed an album-length promo, with a little help from his friends.
Warning: there's an 80's video-art vibe to the opening.

Dischord on Spotify
Attention skate-punkers. Ever wondered what that obscure Fugazi track on the 20 Years of Dischord compilation is? (It's good!) Or whether the second Evens album was any better than the first? (No!) Dischord now have their extensive catalogue on Spotify, giving you easy access to Fugazi, Minor Threat, French Toast, Dag Nasty and dozens of others ...so you can listen for yourself.
Some personal recommendations: Egg Hunt and Embrace (both awesome post-Minor Threat, pre-Fugazi Ian Mackaye bands)

This one's an oldie ....where I come from. As it's allegedly about to remade, let's enjoy the original Lethal Weapon trailer.
I remember being on holiday in France and seeing posters for this (L'arme Fatale) and that Sidney Poitier movie where they're chasing The Kurgen through the mountains. Looks like only one of them bagged a spot in my memory.

Read more 4 star reviewsThere's An App For That: Yurekuru
BC and I are in the field over in Tokyo this week ....and have been rocked by the frequent aftershocks from last months big quake (a magnitude 7.1 and a 7.4 being the biggest). A frequent sound prior to the tremor is the ding ding of the Yurekuru App, which gives locals a quick heads-up. You can even set a minimum intensity over which you want warning, as most people here don't get out of bed for less than a 7.
Japan doesn't use the same magnitude system as the West, preferring the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale which records quakes in actual relative intensity - rating the quake bigger the closer you are to the epicentre. The ratings are also accompanied by a written description, ranging from "Hanging objects such as lamps swing slightly" through "Hanging objects swing violently. Most unstable ornaments fall. Occasionally, dishes in a cupboard and books on a bookshelf fall and furniture moves" to "Most furniture moves to a large extent and some jumps up".
Update: The USGS has data streams accessible by the "Quakes" app - in English.

Netflix Vs HBO
Netflix seems to be fancying itself as the next HBO, commisioning a remake of 1990 British TV show House of Cards under the guiding hand of David Fincher - and starring Kevin Spacey. The show will initially run exclusively via Netflix's own streaming services late next year. In a show of confidence, they have commisioned two full series up front - 26 episodes. Quite a stretch, considering the original was only four parts.
Netflix already has 20m subscribers, compared to HBO's 28m. If only Love Film was as ambitious.

New Eddie Vedder: Ukulele Songs
Eddie Vedder is back with a new solo album on May 31st, his first since the recent-Pearl-Jam trumping Into The Wild soundtrack. Ukulele Songs is made up of new songs and covers, unsurprisingly played on a ukulele. Don't worry if that's a deal-breaker for you however as he also has a tour film - Water On The Road - coming out on the same date and directed by Fugazi's Brendan Canty. That film is culled from 2008's solo tour and features solo cuts mixed in with Pearl Jam classics.
First single Longing To Belong is out today.

Ad Nauseum: Day V Lately
Anyone who remembers J.R. Hartley from 1983 will get the joke with Yell's mildly nauseating updated commercial, but the campaign goes beyond the TV ad. Check out Day V Lately's website, in all in 1996-era glory. Best viewed in Internet Explorer.
Strange to only aim an ad at the over 28's, but at least Yellow Pages seem to be becoming aware of who might actually use them these days. We have Ask Jeeves now after all.
